The educational objective of this game is to provide students, middle and high-school level, with a fun, interactive investigational tool to enhance learning skills related to the research process. Playing this computer game will demonstrate the role of animals in research, safeguards involved in lab animal research, obstacles and challenges in lab animal research. Successful completion of this game will also demonstrate a link between lab animal research and the health of a community. The game can be used as a stand-alone tool or in conjunction with the more detailed "Rat Study" teaching guide developed by Michigan teacher Amy Zitzelberger of Hazel Park High School. Ohio teachers will be provided with these materials free-of-charge. A nominal fee will be assessed to others wishing to purchase the CD and teaching guide. This educational board game teaches students about various diseases, disease transmission, types of remedies, the healthcare system, and the "animal helpers" used in research to help cure various illnesses and diseases. Infection's disease cards are color coded to indicate the degree of seriousness (from red being the most serious followed by white and then blue). Each card includes the disease's common and Latin names, causes, symptoms, and treatments. The object of the game is for players to cure themselves of their diseases before they "die." This curriculum provides practical lessons for grades 4-8 that help students connect issues in healthcare with biomedical and animal research. It introduces a series of easy-to-use, customized and thought-provoking "Game Plans" for 1 hour during a five-week period. The Playbook curriculum comes with: Instructions for each Game Day, BioSTARS science supplement newsletters, pre- and post-game questionnaires and a Teacher Evaluation, (5) Infection - Animal Helpers Version educational board games to accommodate one classroom; trivia game prizes; and customized pre-game lesson plans. Cost: Free to Ohio teachers who complete registration form and agree to administer pre- and post-game questionnaires (valued at over $250).
